Filmy Cancun, Mexico Destination Wedding

AUTUMN + JAKE, Unico 20°87°, Cancun, mexico

This wedding was truly a dream to take part in. Mexico is always one of my favorite locations for weddings - from the colors, the food, the vibes, the music, and the scenery… it’s pretty hard to beat!

One of the benefits of destination weddings for the bride and the guests is that what would have been just a wedding “day” together at a normal wedding turns into a vacation together packed full of quality time (both with your partner and your guests).

What people don’t realize is that that same concept applies to your vendors that travel for the destination wedding! When I travel for a wedding, I am spending a couple days/nights in that location. That time spent there allows me to do 3 things.

1 - I am spending time away from my “real life” to really be in photographer/work mode and zone in to that.

2 - I am spending time in that location which allows me to immerse myself into the culture of the area/country and get into the applicable mood for the wedding in that location. I also am able to see what the lighting looks like, and location scout a little bit.

3 - I often end up spending more time with my clients and their guests. Whether that means attending the rehearsal dinner, partying with them the night before, seeing them around the resort or playing volleyball in the pool together… I form deeper bonds with everyone in the group. This ALWAYS (without fail) results in better photos. The more comfortable my clients are with me as a person, the better and more vulnerable their photos are. It’s the same for the guests.

In addition to all the benefits of a destination wedding, I also offer a weekend package which has become very popular with my destination clients! This allows for a unique type of coverage and style of images. If you are wanting storytelling photography, photo coverage that extends over the entire story of your wedding weekend is one of the best ways that you can actually tell the full story with your images.

In this gallery, we were able to do a more casual, romantic and candid photoshoot the morning after their wedding. This type of photoshoot not only gives them photos that are more free and fun and true to their relationship (wedding day photos can be that way too, but running and jumping in the ocean is a little harder in a wedding dress!) — but it gives them a different style of images/outfits in this beautiful location that has suddenly become very important in their life story.

I was honored to get so close to autumn and jake during this trip and still feel such a strong friendship with them and their family. A huge part of who I am as a person is that I care very deeply for the people that come into my life - it’s one of the reasons I love my job so much. Spending time with them on the biggest day of their lives connects us like no other, and that connection is always the greatest honor of my job. Autumn and jake were no exception - and joining in their destination wedding weekend deepened that even further. I believe the photos are proof of that. 🤍

Images were shot on a mix of digital and 35mm film.
